Less common causes include irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes mellitus, celiac sprue, Crohn’s disease, or other GI disorders such as adhesions that restrict expansion of the stomach.
As it is challenging to monitor the stretching of the stomach on a day-to-day basis, patients are encouraged to keep a journal during the initial post-operative period.
The following guidelines may help reduce stretching or bloating:
1) Avoid tight clothing and belts
2) Maintain good hydration – drink at least eight glasses of water per day
3) Eat smaller meals
4) Eat smaller amounts of food at one time
5) Avoid high-fat foods (fried, red meats, etc.) and simple carbohydrates (sugary foods or refined grains such as white bread and kinds of pasta)
6) Avoid carbonated beverages
7) Avoid alcohol and tobacco products
8) Take antacids as directed by your physician
9) Exercise regularly
10) Avoid vigorous exercise in the post-operative period and in hot, humid weather. If you must exercise in such conditions, drink more fluid 1-2 hours before to prevent dehydration
11) Begin a low fiber diet gradually to avoid additional bloating or cramping
Patients who have a history of hernia repair may notice an increased incidence of stomach stretching due to scarring. The restriction in expansion from the operative procedure prevents the abdomen from hurting, leading to persistent bloating and discomfort. In these people, addressing the issue by having a revisionary process such as a “purse-string” or “TEP” may be helpful.
